Held every four years, with a hiatus during World War II, the Games have grown from featuring 11 countries and athletes, to a global spectacle of 6, sports men and women from across 72 nations and territories. Underpinned by the core values of humanity, equality and destiny, the Games aim to unite the Commonwealth family through a glorious festival of sport. Chantal Petitclerc became the first gold medal winner in a para-sport in An occasion that marked the first time an event for an athlete with a disability had been part of the official programme.

The encouraging ethos of the Games has stirred athletes to sprint faster, leap higher and push themselves to the very limits of what the human body is capable of.

The Games will be the first time West Midlands has played host to the event, following London , and Manchester Rugby League World Cup. Originally scheduled to take place in England last summer, the tournament was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and will now take place between 15 October November.

The tournament will feature 61 games, with separate tournaments for men, women and wheelchair players.

The tournament is being played in the winter for the first time in its history, because Qatar, which is a small country next to Saudi Arabia, has extremely hot summers and warm winters. The first match will be played on the 21 November, with the final in the capital Doha a week before Christmas on 18 December. England have already qualified and could be joined by Wales or Scotland, who have reached the World Cup play-off semi-finals , due to take place at the end of March.
