Check progress disk defragmenter vista
Over time, fragmentation can become a big problem if left unchecked. Consequently, hard disk performance suffers. Although you don't get much feedback in Vista's Disk Defragmenter user interface, the Defrag command line tool is still alive and well and is more than capable of providing you with a detailed fragmentation analysis report. You'll then see a UAC and will need to respond accordingly. Now, you can see just how effective the automated disk defragmentation process is.
Notice that on my example hard disk, the percent of file fragmentation is zero and only five folders are fragmented. While you can't really get an animated graphic of the actual defragmentation process in operation in Vista, you can watch the disk activity by using the Disk graph in the Resource Overview section of the Reliability and Performance monitor.
To launch it quickly, just click the Start button, type reliability in the Start Search text box and press [Enter].
To get an even better view, you can maximize the window. Then, click the arrow on the Disk header to reveal the Disk Detail Table. The Disk graph will be very active while Disk Defragmenter is working.
In the Disk Detail Table, you can follow along as works with each file. Admittedly, the technique isn't as graphically entertaining as say Windows 98's Disk Defragmenter or even Windows XP's Disk Defragmenter, but it does give you that same sense of accomplishment. Since Vista's developers have totally automated the disk defragmenting operation, they pared down the user interface in Disk Defragmenter to a simple dialog box consisting of just two buttons, as shown in Figure A -one that opens a scheduling dialog box and one that allows you to manually launch the defragmenting operation.
As you might expect, the scheduled task just runs this command line tool which you can see by looking in Scheduled Tasks. Interestingly, it uses an undocumented switch of -i. I can't find any info on this — does anyone know what this switch does?
Are there any other undocumented controls for this program? I believe this is a new switch with Vista. Right click the "Command Prompt" button and select "Run as administrator".
A command prompt window will appear. Everything you run in this Window will be run with administrator rights. This is when asked for admin.
If you want to use the command prompt defrag, right click the cmd executable type cmd into the search box in your start menu and click Run As Administrator. You will need to enter an admin password. Then when you run defrag you will have admin privs. Use an administrator command prompt then run the program again.
I have the same issue with Vista. I cannot schedule disk fragmentation because it keeps resetting the Modify Schedule to Never. I have been unable to find any comments on this subject. I have to put a note on my calendar to remember to defrag every few months or so. If you find out anymore information on this subject would you please let me know? Read, young child, read. Right at the very beginning it states: " You will need Admin rights ".
As my kids would say "DUH! Thanks for your feedback. It states that it's defraging but the hour glass just sit there. I have tried to troubleshoot by disabling the scheduler but I'm unable to take the green check mark in the box which tells me that scheduler is enabled.. This thread is locked.
