Windows xp sticker worn off

One of the last group of 5 digits of the product key was unreadable. I didn't have any acrylic paint but used ground-up pencil lead instead and it did the trick - magic! Thanks for the incredible easy solution. I was losing all hope of ever getting that key back after trying everything for the last 4 days.

Has not anybody realized that the Microsoft C o A labels produced after XP are made deliberately so that the print fades away in time. My sticker was so badly worn that it looked like a blank white sticker. I tried this method: Basically I did the pencil thing, but because I didnt want to get too crazy, I just took a junk envelope and scribbled on it with the pencil for a bit until the envelope was saturated with graphite.

I then rubbed the envelope portion that was covered in graphite onto the sticker. Do not scribble directly onto the sticker!! After a few minutes, I could start to see the bar code appear again, albeit extremely faded. Now, mine was so far gone that I didn't get the product key to appear nicely at all like the guy with the acrylics, but if I looked at it from just the right angle in the dawn light of my window, I could actually read it!!!

It took several attempts to finally get it right and about 15 minutes of scribbling and rubbing. K and R, Q and O and 0, 5 and 6 were almost impossible to distinguish from one another, but before there was literally nothing there at all, even if I held it at any angle. I thought for sure my product key was gone for good Thanks so much!

I don't recall seeing registration on Windows 7 machines, thought that was a Windows XP deal. I've done this a couple of times for various home users.

Microsoft has been gracious about emailing the user a new key. The OS is pre-activated. You can buy recovery media direct from HP, or from www. You can install from any OEM media even system builder media , but in those cases you will need to call MS for the key.

If you're not using the HP recovery media, odds are high you won't find this driver online. We mostly run Dell desktops and this hasn't been an issue before, was just wondering what we'd need to do to get the license that shipped with the tower.
