It also comes up with the option to Eject or rename and when I try to eject, it says Remov Disk F is in use. Save any files on this disc and then, close the files or programs using the files before trying again.

First, my symptom:. That may not the the exact wording, but it should sound familiar. Anyway, Windows would search for drivers and ultimately assign a status of "Unknown device" in device manager. Any attempt to update the driver would result in a message that "Windows has determined the best driver for this device is already installed.
Other USB devices worked just fine. A drawing tablet, a scanner, and a printer worked great. Only my USB storage devices were affected. If you have tried everything else, try the following. In fact, you may want to try this before trying anything else, because it involves making very few actual changes to your computer. The first thing to try is simple: Totally unplug your computer from the outlet.

I was having problems with a thumb drive and also with my Olympus digital camera. It is ridiculous that Microsoft has not published a simple fix for this. There are about forums out there that discuss this problem so it becomes a trial and error situation and you can't know which one is going to work until you go through each one -- and some of them take quite some time.
At the risk of appearing stupid, how do I do a manual search for drivers and will this work for windows os? After contacting Olympus support, they directed me to upgrade to Olympus Master 2, which by the way is a free upgrade. One of them on my Windows Vista Home Premium is recognized; but the other one it does not recognize. I fixed it as Tankyank suggested "Called tech and they said that vista turns off USB when it goes to sleep.
The fix is to go to power management click on advanced and click on USB. It will probably say disable, click enable and close. I did this and have not had a problem.

To get to the settings in case you are not totally computer savvy with Vista yet Go into personalization: screen saver: change power settings: change plan settings: change advanced power settings: USB settings: USB selective suspend settings: mine was enabled on battery and disabled on plugged in. I changed the plugged in to enabled, it then recognized the drive but it thought my USB 2. I disabled it again, and the drive works now and it recognizes the port as USB 2.
I've tried all the stuff described in this thread and it didn't work for me. Maybe this here will help someone - very similar approach. Problem drives shown in Device Manager: either volsnap. The only way to make them work is to go into Device Manager, uninstall all the elements with yellow warning signs and then with right-click let System automatically search for new hardware. Finally totally frustrated I was about to backup all my stuff and reinstall Vista. In my case volsnap.
I was trying to fix those specific files although they weren't the actual trouble makers. That's why all the online research didn't really help me besides putting me into the right set of mind.
My last reinstallation finally worked, which I still can't believe rebooted and tested several times. In my case: rtusbstor Installing a functioning version of the drive that inserts this file into the appropriate folder.

Thank you for sharing this info. I purchased a computer from a computer fair that had Vista Ultimate OEM with it all sealed ready for me to install. I have waited for a long time for this product to come out and have been using XP Pro for a very long time. I have only had Vista now for under a year and have been totally dissatisfied with it. There seems to be problem after problem with it. I cant even use my portable hard drive on it! To add insult to injury you have now bought out Windows 7.
This is far superior to Vista Ultimate and I feel sure that it can cope with my portable hard drive problem. You should recall all vista version and replace with Windows 7 regardless of where they came form and how long the person has had the product. Can you give me the address and managers name so I can send my one back for an exchange.
Just sent this to Microsoft. We should not have to keep bodging the system up like the above. It should work out of the box. Vista must have been put together by an imbecile without any testing. It is now also impossible to go into the registry and edit out the devices so that they are picked up as "new" I have tried the point the driver search to various location "fix" but this has no effect.

I uninstalled the Netgear software and deleted the Netgear SC folder to prevent automatic reinstall, and all my USB thumb drives are now working fine Neil.
