Top Voted Answer. By default whilst using a guitar controller, the guitar icon is always default, I don't think there is a way to change that. You can however set the NPC to play in your band whilst you are playing, aswell. To do this create a new character and then go to your band profile roster, on the right side of the roster there is a box which allows you to use substitutes for absent players.

That is to say if you don't have a subbing guitarist and the main guitarist is absent, the NPC character that you picked will play the guitar, although they will dissappear if a human player starts to play guitar.
